Tragedy Strikes Again

Just in case you're wondering, Savannah's newest batch of chickens died. Not only them, but two others that a friend gave us! We're just not meant to have chickens. One of them was a psychotic serial killer!! Yikes!!

This bad chicken pecked and pecked at his partner on the body until there was so much internal damage that it died. Can you believe that?!? There was no blood, just a dead body. So, we had a murder mystery. How fun, right?? Not! We couldn't figure out how the thing died with no bodily damage, but then Savannah reminded us that this chicken would peck 24/7...no kidding. He pecked on everything, including the walls of his cage. Just peck, peck, peck, continuously. We agreed that that had to be what happened, but we weren't sure.

The next week, we got 2 more chickens from a friend, who were a little bit bigger. He pecked one to death, which we didn't notice, but then I noticed him pecking one of the live one, while the live one stood on the body of the dead one trying to "protect" it. It was so sad. He just stood there taking hit after hit from the serial killer. Awful. Anyway, we immediately removed the live chicken to a safe location, but he was in shock already. Then, the killer started pecking at the dead one!! It was so weird. I'm telling you....a serial killer!!

The live one lasted another day and a half, but eventually succombed to the internal injuries I'm sure he sustained. And, oddly enough, the killer pecked soooo much that he eventually died too. We think it's because he knocked his brain loose or something. He sustained self-inflicted internal injuries. So, we ended up with no chickens. I think we'll take a break from chicken raising for awhile. We've been traumatized enough for now.
